Forced Into Being Obese

Skinny women get no love in Mauritania
By Rukmini Callimachi

"To make a girl big and plump, the tradition of 'gavage' - a French word borrowed from the practice of fattening of geese for foie gras - starts as early as four, as it did for Mint, who was forced to drink 55 litres of camel's milk a day. When she vomited, she was beaten. If she refused to drink, her fingers were bent back until they touched her hand. Her stomach hurt so much she prayed all the animals in the world would die so that there would be no more milk to be had. Now, she has trouble walking and suffers from a combination of weight-related illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease."My mother thinks she made me beautiful. But she made me sick," says Mint, who asked that her full last name not be disclosed because she feels embarrassed by her past.

To end the brutal practice, the government launched a TV and radio campaign highlighting the risks of obesity. Because most Mauritanian love songs describe the ideal woman as fat, the health ministry commissioned catchy odes to thin women."

Olivia Newton-John's Daughter Chloe Recovering From Anorexia

Australian singer Olivia Newton-John Saturday her daughter Chloe was "doing well" following her battle with anorexia.

"She's fine, she's doing really well, she's been through it, she's healthy," Newton-John told Hong Kong reporters. "She's just finished her record and it's really fantastic."

Chloe Lattanzi revealed recently she had been suffering from the eating disorder after pictures of her looking gaunt appeared in the media.

She has followed in her mother's footsteps by recently securing a record deal.

Newton-John, who is performing a concert in Hong Kong on Sunday, also told of her faith in the healing power of music, saying it had helped her with her own battle against breast cancer.
She said music's therapeutic qualities had been scientifically proven, and she had hoped her latest album, "Grace and Gratitude," would help others. A portion of the CD's proceeds will go to cancer research.

"It's the relaxing experience of music. It accesses a different part of your brain. I recorded it (the album) as a healing experience for myself, but in doing so hopefully created a healing experience for other people," she said.

Newton-John suffered breast cancer in the 1990s and has campaigned actively on issues surrounding the disease ever since, a campaign she said her fame had helped.

"The two go hand in hand because if I hadn't had the career I had, people wouldn't want to hear me, if I was just Jo Blow down the street. So I think it's given me the opportunity to talk about... so many important things, like the environment," she said.

"And I think the two are related. The rise in cancer is related to the state of the environment."
Newton-John said she had several projects coming up, including a movie, details of which would be announced at the Cannes film festival, a new television show and fundraising for a new cancer wing for an Australian hospital.

But she dismissed rumours of a new movie link-up with the American actor John Travolta, with whom she starred in "Grease."

"We've talked about this for years... I'd love to work with him of course but there are no plans," she said.

Posh Drinking To Increase Appetite?

Victoria Beckham is reportedly sick of the criticism she receives for her skeletal build, and is allgedly drinking wine to increase her appetite.

"It's the reason she has a drink. If she has a wine or two then she'll have an appetite like everyone gets when they're on a night out and drinking," a source told Closer magazine. "She's got a big wine cooler in her house in Madrid and will have one in California when she finds a house. She and David have a life director who is helping them organize the move, and she is also sourcing nice Californian wines."

Something tells me she's just a wino and is trying to put a positive spin on things. The day Victoria tries to put on weight is the day Hell freezes over.

Courtney Love's Diet Drama, Us Magazine

Courtney Love is getting more defensive, telling Us Magazine, "No doctor would do gastric bypass, even if I begged... No lipo, no gastric, no tummy tuck."

A source told Us that"[Courtney]'s getting rid of all her size tens, eights and sixes," with clothes set to be auctioned off on eBay and others donated to women in need. The source also adds, "She's also quitting cigarettes... Courtney doesn't want anyone or anything toxic in her life any more."

JLo, Looking Healthy

Jennifer Lopez speaks about her famous curves in the latest edition of Elle magazine:

"I have a butt, I have boobs and I have a woman's curves," Lopez says. "There is no way I'd see them go to zero. I just don't see how I could get down to that size and still be healthy. It wouldn't work.

"I eat meat, I eat carbs, I even eat McDonald's," but she notes, "What I don't do is ever overeat. I don't eat desserts and I can limit the chocolate chip cookies to one or two."

When Lopez does gain a few extra pounds, "I feel it immediately and I just get a bit more strict with myself.

"For me, looking good is all about looking healthy, and the ultimate beauty secret is about being happy in yourself."

Quote of the day: Sienna Miller

"I don't really exercise and I eat all the burgers I want," Sienna Miller tells InTouch magazine. "But I'd rather be lumpy and heavy than skinny and miserable."

"Soon, all the burgers will attack my rear end and I'll be a whale," says Sienna. "[But] I'll remain an eggs, bacon, waffles girl."

Hilary Duff: "I Got Too Skinny"

Hilary Duff reveals her insecurities and passion for junk food in an interview with CosmoGIRL:

"I have the same insecurities about my body that every girl has and I made a conscious choice to get in shape. I've always been a junk-food eater, but I started paying more attention to what I put in my body and cut out foods like pizza, chicken fingers, and French fries," Duff explains to CosmoGIRL. "If I knew I'd want dessert one night, I wouldn't have bread that day. If I wanted to eat bread, I wouldn't have dessert."

Hilary admits that the figure she was sporting in 2005 was too spindly.

"Seeing how well it worked motivated me to keep going, but I hit a period when I got too skinny. I wasn't too obsessed with it, but I did learn that there have to be days when you just don't think about it."

Mandy Moore Told To Lose Weight

In the May issue of Elle, Mandy Moore discusses her body image:

"Sometimes I feel fine. Sometimes I don't feel so great. I'm a regular person. I'm not that thin," says Moore. "I'm OK with representing a different type than the Hollywood beauty ideal. But other people aren't so OK with that. I've been told that I have to lose weight for stuff before."
Moore laments, "It's mortifying. It's hard to have someone come up and go, 'You should lose a few pounds.' And they don't say it delicately ... It's only happened to me once before. But once is enough to make you feel awful."
Moore is talking about her role in the forthcoming romantic comedy "License to Wed" - according to Elle, a studio suit saw Moore in "American Dreamz" and decided he wanted to see a whole lot less of her when filming began.
"All I can tell you," director Ken Kwapis acknowledges to Elle, "is that I've never been on any production where some executive didn't say, 'Can't that actress lose weight?'"

Alicia Silverstone's Lifestyle Change

Alicia Silverstone says her favorite foods were steak and doughnuts before she became a vegan. Alicia now follows a strict no meat or dairy diet and is known for her environmentally friendly views, and has confessed she loved feasting on calorific treats before changing her lifestyle.

When asked by InStyle Home magazine what she ate before she became a vegan, Alicia said, "Steak and doughnuts. Now I'm a total health nut. I don't get sick very often and when I do it's for a short period.

"It's empowering to know that you're responsible for how you feel each day because of the way you treat your body."

As well as eating healthily, the 30-year-old actress stays fit by jumping on her trampoline. Alicia said, "It's great exercise and really makes you giggle."

Nicole Still Hasn't Gained Much

Nicole Richie attended the 14th Annual Race to Erase MS last week, but it looks as though she hasn't gained that much weight - I'd say she's gained 5 pounds at most since the 'shocking' beach pictures when she looked like an actual skeleton.

Pam Anderson Thought She Was Hotter

Pam Anderson has commented about the Hawaii white bikini pictures on her blog:

"I've just been sent some pics from Hawaii - I have to laugh - well at least the world knows I don't get botox - ha!...I'm much hotter in my mind - (I swear I look better) - then again I hardly check a mirror before I go outside - may start doing that more. I may have to start working out too though - genes and gymnastics have gotten me this far. I just refuse to let these paparazzi ruin my time or my lifestyle in general with my children - I'm not going to spend time putting makeup on or staying covered up on the beach - it's definitely surreal though - I think I look alright but everywhere you turn you have a camera in your face - up you butt - it's crazy - too many tabloids - must be running out of stuff to print...I'm a semi-retired single mom - hello?"

Skeleton alert - Jenna Jameson

Jenna Jameson claims she is trying to gain some weight back:

"I got pretty skinny for a little bit," Jenna said Friday night at the T-Mobile Sidekick iD launch party. "My lightest was about 92 pounds." Jenna joked to TMZ cameras, "I ate today!" before heading into the event. Then on her way home, one of Jenna's friends handed her a corndog, to which she announced, "I love hot dogs on a stick. So f**king sexy!"

Eek - 92 pounds and 5 foot 7 seems a bit on the small side, doesn't it?

America Ferrera Doesn't Have What It Takes To Be Anorexic

Ugly Betty star America Ferrera tells W magazine (May issue) that she will never be a celebrity stick figure.
"There are times when I go to the gym and really try, and there are times when I just don't," said Ferrera. "I gain a pound; I lose a pound. But I think I've developed a really good sense of when I'm doing something for myself as opposed to when I'm doing something because of other people's expectations of me. And honestly, even if I wanted to be anorexic, I just don't have what it takes," she continues. "After four hours of being anorexic, I'd be like, 'It's been four whole hours! Feed me!"

Courtney Denies Surgery, Can't Use Keyboard

Courtney Love denies having gastric bypass surgery on her official website:

" FDA says you have to have a BMI of above 40 and that equals at least being 100 pounds overweight at least other wsie its ILLEGAL.
I know spmeone who troed to get that shit and no dr would give it to her an dhse was pudgier than i was, its total utter shite, i lost weightthe hard way and people cant accept it,whwnever ANYONE loses weight by determintaion and grit fast its suspect i got muyinspirationf rom Oprah losing so much weight on Slim Fast,. thats how i did it, thio sis nonsesne my breath is great and i dont "vomit inot a towel" it sjust cynical crazy bullshit,

Gwen Stefani Dieting Since 6th Grade

Gwen Stefani tells Harper's Bazaar (May issue): "I've always been on a diet, ever since I was in the sixth grade. It's an ongoing battle and it's a nightmare. But I like clothes too much, and I always wanted to wear the outfits I would make.... And I'm very vain." Gwen added, "I hate talking about it, but it's true."

On nursing her way back to skinniness, Gwen said "It's so much work afterward to get the weight off," she says. "If you just do it, it comes off. And when you're nursing, like I am, your metabolism is like whoosh!"

Gwen says she eats "all the healthy stuff" most of the time, "but I let myself cheat once or twice a day with a cookie or pizza."

She admits, "If you had paparazzi outside your house, you'd make sure you looked good, too."

Although she sounds somewhat obsessed, vain and insecure about her body, I do appreciate how honest she's being.

Fat genes

Research published in Friday's edition of Science journal asserts that people who carry two copies of the variation of the FTO gene weigh 7 pounds more than people who do not. Still, this seems to be little more than a correlation, because scientists don't know what FTO is supposed to do.
Researchers from the University of Oxford and the Peninsula Medical Center in Exeter used blood samples from over 38 000 participants: mostly white Europeans, about one in six thought to carry two copies of the gene variant. Those who had one copy of the FTO had a 30 per cent increased risk of obesity, while those who had two copies had almost a 70 per cent increased risk.
Approximately one in three American adults is obese with millions more overweight. Primary causes are not enough exercise and bad eating habits. Even so, innate biology plays some roleand researchers are exploring a variety of genes and hormones that seem involved in the balancing act of weight gain and loss.

Drew, Cover Girl

Drew Barrymore has been announced the new face of Cover Girl for a 2008 campaign.

Barrymore said, “I want to honor the tradition of CoverGirl but hopefully bring myself and my personality into it.”

Cover Girl seems eager as well: “We partnered with Drew because she emulates the iconic image of CoverGirl with her fresh, natural beauty and energetic yet authentic spirit.”

It seems that this 'commercial' fashion brand has embraced someone a little more on the normal/human side of thin to represent them.

Courtney Love Denies Gastric Bypass

Courtney Love claims that her recent weight loss was due to a macrobiotic diet and yoga, but rumors are swirling that Courtney underwent a gastric bypass to shed the weight.

A source recently told PageSix "She's telling people she got the gastric band surgery. She even said she had to sleep with a towel by her because the surgery makes her [vomit] all the time and is worried she won't be able to make out with anyone because of her breath."

Courtney's rep has denied that she had the procedure, saying "Not true. She says she never got surgery."

Topshop/Kate Moss Drama Continues

New York magazine has been a bit negative about Kate Moss' upcoming clothing line for Topshop.

"Maybe the chain was yearning for clothes that would only look good on people who are hungry and sullen? If so, then Topshop hit the jackpot," says the article. "We're lovers of things like food and hairbrushes, so the whole bratty heroin-chic fad she embodied back in the early '90s bored us more than it intrigued us."
The magazine refers to Kate's coke addiction "about as shocking [as] a dead battery." The article went on to say: "Since then, we've grown impatient with the lack of remorse on Moss's part, as well as with her insistence on continuing to rub shoulders with her greasy, pasty, substance-bloated musician ex-/current/who-knows boyfriend Pete Doherty. Add that to the unflattering accounts of her personal habits, and she makes for an annoyingly fatuous train wreck. For God's sake, Kate, you're a mother. Grow up. Preferably before your daughter does."

Defend your bosom!

Dancing With The Stars co-host Samantha Harris has addressed rumours that she had breast implants.

"I did not get a boob job, but I have put on a little weight because I am happy to finally say I am pregnant," Harris said on E! Online.
"My husband, Michael, and I are so excited to have our first baby," said Harris, due this fall. "We just bought our first house and can't wait to share it with our little one. Everyone at E! has been so wonderfully supportive. This is a delightful time in our lives."

Heroes Can't Be Fat

Jonathan Rhys Meyers will be portraying King Henry VIII in the new TV series The Tudors.

"You're trying to sell a historical period drama to a country like America, you don't want a big, fat, 250 pounds, red haired guy with a beard," Rhys Meyers said. "It doesn't let people embrace the fantastic monarch he was, because they're not attracted to the package. Heroes do not look like Henry VIII. That is just the world we live in."

Liposuction: It could be Britney's Prerogative.

Rumour has it that Britney Spears underwent liposuction to remove some poundage.

A few sources have claimed Spears had lipo sometime in the last two weeks:

-Star magazine alleges she had the "head-to-toe," "$130,000" treatment

- The fansite Britney Glamour Photos posted photos that show the pop star leaving a place identified as The Advanced Lipo Dissolve Center in Las Vegas on Monday, April 2.

-Us Weekly said she was rumoured to have gotten liposuction on Easter Monday, April 9, in Las Vegas.

Britney's PR rep denies the story, saying she was lounging poolside on Easter Monday in Vegas, not recovering from lipo as would be expected. She has been out and about quite a lot lately, she was in L.A. on April 4 for her sister Jamie Lynn's 15th birthday, she was spotted on April 6 with her two sons, one-year-old Sean P. and 7-month-old Jay, and on April 8 she went to Staples. Would she be able to be on the go if she DID have lipo?

You decide.

Sarah's Anatomy

"When I was eight, my parents divorced and my mother and I moved to San Diego from Mexico. Between the culture shock of coming from another country and the stigma of having an accent (I heard my share of “Do you have a green card?” jokes), I always felt like I stuck out. On top of all that, I was a lot taller and bigger-boned than most girls my age. My mom did a great job of raising me; this story is not about her. But I think she was very critical of her own body and projected that onto me. There were times when she felt she needed to lose 20 pounds, and therefore I also needed to lose 20 pounds. The mentality was, we should lose weight. As a result, I grew up wanting to look like someone else rather than appreciating the body I had." - Sarah Ramirez (taken from Glamour magazine)

Lindsay's "Charity" Trip to Japan

Lindsay Lohan has been signed to front the Jill Stuart's new couture line after the success of her Miu Miu campaign. Lohan will travel to Japan for the photoshoot (ah the real reason behind the 'charity' trip revealed!) before heading to London to begin work on a new film.

Just a short while ago Lindsay told the media "I’m going to Japan soon with my friend Charlotte Ronson, who’s a designer, and I’m researching some charity work that I can do and visit some orphanages.”

Jenna Jameson Unrecognizable

Jenna Jameson left last week's Exxxotica early because her line was shorter than rival Tera Patrick's. Jameson was contractually obligated to be present for 6 hours but arrived late both days and left 45 minutes early on the second day.

A source said "When fans openly asked her about her [botched surgery] and why she was so thin, her people cut them off. But she shouldn't be standing in front of an old photo of herself when she's about 40 pounds skinnier than she was."

What's with the extremes?

Why is it that fashion powerhouses like Topshop and Jean-Paul Gaultier can only see things in terms of extremes? The two ladies above are Kate Moss and Beth Ditto (super talented singer of the band the Gossip, one of my favorite bands) - two ladies approached to do a fashion deal with Topshop.

Beth admitted "Kate and I are completely different. But men like bigger girls as much as skinny ones." As Kate designed a range for Topshop, Beth added "Topshop wants me to work with Kate. I'll do it only if I can design clothes. If Kate can then so can I.

"Give me the job. I want to design, I want you to make clothes for big girls, big boys, I want you to make big sizes. I don't want just your money or the cred of hanging out with Kate Moss, which is fine, but it's not want I want in life. I want more. I want what she gets. I don't think it's fair to put my face somewhere where they would never let me in there to wear their clothes. I want the respect that Kate Moss gets. If they want our music they've got to actually do something to earn it. I can get money anywhere, I don't need your money unless you're going to do it my way. [Top Shop] don't want to dress people that look like me, that have a normal body, a bigger body, whatever. I mean I don't really know why they want The Gossip to do things for them, I don't understand because if they saw me in the street they'd never give me the time of day. I like me, I think that other girls like me, they need people like me, people who feel really strongly and will say no."

In October 2006, fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier reacted to the size zero debate by putting a size 20 plus size model on the catwalk for his 30th anniversary show in Paris.

The fashion industry likes extremes because they are attention grabbing, but I have to wonder when the fashion world will incorporate normal sized women - not dangerously thin, not dangerously overweight - into their fashion shows. This reaction by fashion houses to incorporate a token fat girl into their shows or spreads does not constitute real change, it's nothing but a publicity stunt. The only change that will be effective is if average sized women are regularly incorporated into these shows and photo spreads, but I doubt that will ever happen because fashion is and always has been about attaining the unattainable.

Beckinsale Regrets Anorexia Admission/Wishes She Were Bustier Like Latifah

Kate Beckinsale regrets revealing her teenage eating disorder to the media because she is always asked about anorexia in interviews.

She says that her daughter has no clue about her teenage anorexia and that she feels "violated" every time it comes up in an interview.

Kate tells Glamour magazine, "The only reason I ever brought it up in the first place is because I was young, I read a lot of misinformation about eating disorders.
"But, because I picked the wrong magazine to tell my story to, I wished I'd never said anything. It was totally sensationalised and that's been a real drag. I felt terribly violated."
Kate doesn't think her daughter will become anorexic because she has a happier home life than Kate did.

"I believe anorexia, alcoholism and drug abuse in teens are more about what is happening in the home than a problem with images in the media. It's the nice girl's way of becoming a crack whore.
"It means they're in some kind of pain that needs to be addressed."

If only it were that simple Kate.
UPDATE Apri l 11: Beckinsale's Bust Blues

In the same interview with Glamour magazine, Kate said she wishes she were bustier like Queen Latifah.
"[I'd like to be] someone with gigantic real breasts, like Queen Latifah," Kate reveals. "I'm so fascinated by breasts because my mother didn't have them either. If I had them, I'd run up and down a flight of stairs."

Fat Chat Mandatory

In social situations, women often revert to conversation about weight. A new study finds that women's participation in fat chat is mandatory, especially for middle school-aged Caucasian females.

Study co-author Denise Martz of Appalachian State University says “We have found in our research that both male and female college students know the norm of fat talk—that females are supposed to say negative things about their bodies in a group of females engaging in fat talk."

Martz and her colleages showed 124 female and male college students a scene where females were engaging in "fat talk." Partipants were then asked to predict how a fourth female would react to the discourse in the scene. 40% of males and 51% of females believed the fourth female would degrade her body.

“Because women feel pressured to follow the fat talk norm, they are more likely to engage in fat talk with other females,” Martz told LiveScience. “Hence, women normalize their own body dissatisfaction with one another.

“If there are women out there who feel neutrally or even positively about their bodies, I bet we never hear this from them for fear of social sanction and rejection,” she said.

As obesity rates soar and the female body ideal continues to shrink, fat talk may be a coping strategy for some women. “Females like to support one another and fat talk elicits support,” Martz said. “An example would be one saying, ‘It's like, I'm so fat today,’ and another would respond, ‘No, you are not fat, you look great in those pants.’” It may also be that fat talk conveys modesty. “We tend to dislike arrogance and especially dislike it in women (‘bitches’)”, Martz explained. “Women are perceived as OK if they fat talk and acknowledge that their bodies are not perfect but they are working on it.”

This may be more typical of wealthier countries with abundant supplies of food. In countries where food is scarce, heavier bodies are considered more attractive because they convey an image of wealth, status and good fortune. Martz believes that in the United States some people show their social status by their ability to be thin, which translates into meaning they are disciplined in their food intake and exercise.

“I wish women would worry less about their bodies — while still taking good care of their health through behaviors like stress management, regular exercise and healthful eating — and spend more time learning, helping, educating, leading, solving problems, rising to positions of influence and contributing to society in general,” Martz said.

Faulty Body Image

Scientific American has a great article about distorted body image and eating disorders:

Keira apparently hideous. AGAIN.

Keira Knightley's feet are so hideous that she had to have a foot double for her new movie "Atonement", according to a "source."

"Keira's feet were too big and veiny," a source told Britain's Closer magazine. "[Knightley] thought it was really funny."
Keira allegedly used a double for the sex scenes for her movie "Domino" but chose to do them herself for her upcoming movie "Silk"...

"Keira is nude in a couple of scenes, in one she leans over her husband with her gown gaping open, and he remarks that her breasts are small and like a little girl's," a source said.

Sienna's Modesty

Sienna Miller can't take compliments on her body very well.
"My so-called fabulous shape is due to airbrushing. I have small boobs and cellulite," Sienna Miller confessed, adding, "Soon all the burgers will attack my rear and I'll be a whale, but I'll remain an eggs, bacon, waffles girl."

Bonding Over Botox

"This is what's sick about living in LA. My 8-year-old daughter will point to a woman and say, 'Look! That woman's had too much Botox,'" Kate Beckinsale said of her daughter, Lily. "She spots them because they all look a bit like Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter."

Keira's Still Not Good Enough

Keira Knightly reportedly broke out in a serious bout of acne while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End". She apparently had a bad reaction to the make-up:

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is in the final days of post production, but they had a last minute expense. Keira Knightley’s complexion wasn’t up to snuff, so they called in special effects experts to smooth it out. Keira, 22, was said to have had a bad reaction to make-up, and she broke out with acne during filming. Despite the best lighting efforts, the bumps still showed so they were digitally removed in every close-up. Now she looks as beautiful as Johnny Depp."

What's going on with Courtney's stomach?

Not sure if these are photoshopped or not... is this a result of a tummy tuck?

The Lohans Are Obsessed With Diana

Lindsay Lohan wants to play the late Princess Diana in a movie about her tragic life. Linday's life is tragic too, albeit in a slightly different way, and Diana actually had class... but I digress.
Lindsay's mom Dina recently compared her to Di because Lindsay is harassed by the paparazzi.
The troubled actress told In Touch Weekly magazine: "It would be fantastic to play her. She gave back a lot and was such an amazing woman." And now LiLo says wants to do some charity work, "I'm going to Japan soon with my friend Charlotte Ronson, who's a designer, and I'm researching some charity work that I can do and visit some orphanages."

Whatever. You want to do charity work because it will help your image.

Is this becoming a pattern? This half-baked dream of wanting to portray celebrities in biographical films that don't exist? Last year it was Stevie Nicks, now it's Diana. Next year I think she should be a little more realistic and shoot for someone she has more in common with, like Tonya Harding?
